About Nurse-Midwives

While many may believe the care of a “midwife” is old-fashioned, it is actually one of the most sought after and progressive options we provide at Auburn OB-Gyn and Midwifery. Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are registered nurses who have attained a Master’s degree from an accredited university and specialized certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board. Most CNMs are also members of the American College of Nurse-Midwives and are licensed to practice and write prescriptions in each state. CNMs are covered under most health insurance plans, carry malpractice insurance, and are affiliated with a physician to consult and collaborate with as needed. For a consumer, these are the essential traits that distinguish CNMs from other health care professionals and midwives who are not CNMs.

Contemporary CNMs offer a comprehensive range of services including counseling (e.g. teen health, preconception), gynecologic care (e.g. pap smears, breast exams, mammograms, infection testing), contraceptive options (e.g. hormonal and non-hormonal, short and long term), and individualized obstetrical care and lactation support. The midwifery program at Auburn OB-Gyn and Midwifery is extraordinary in that each CNM provides 24/7 coverage for her clients, strives to create personalized care plans with each family, and provides outstanding birth care at both Parkview DeKalb Hospital and Auburn Birthing Center.
